Thesaurus

Parts of the Thesaurus

The Thesaurus comprises the following parts

  1. An Alphabetical list, which contains the Arabic descriptor, followed by the English and French descriptors, then the scope note, then the non-descriptor or non-descriptors, then the equivalent, hierarchical and related terms (if they exist) and the facet number.

    This means:
    • For each Broader Term (BT), there is a Narrower Term (NT), and vice versa.
    • For each Related Term (RT), there is a reciprocally Related Term (RT)
    • For each cross-reference Use (USE) of a non-descriptor, there is a Used For (UF) under the relevant descriptor.
  2. A Categorized Arabic Array which displays the facets or main subjects encompassing all the branches of knowledge related to education in the broadest sense. It is the knowledge tree with its various branches.

  3. An Arabic index with keywords out of context (KWOC) which gives access to any descriptor or non-descriptor through a single word, irrespective of its place in the descriptor. For example, one can search under any of the four words in the descriptor "إعداد المعلمين قبل الخدمة " to access it, each being a keyword in the Thesaurus.

  4. English-French-Arabic index.

These last two indices make it possible for the researcher to access the Arabic descriptor by way of one of the corresponding descriptors in English or French, as well as to look for the required material in all the three languages. The non-Arabic descriptor can also aid researchers who do not possess a complete mastery of Arabic!
